Lisa Richards was born and raised in Australia and it was here that she began her musical journey, studying classical voice technique by day and performing in a punk band at night. Her basic philosophy on singing is, ‘sing whatever moves you, but learn how your voice works and how to take care of it so you’ll have a voice to enjoy your whole life’.
She trained at the Canberra School of Music and then in Sydney with one of Australia’s finest opera singers Joyce Simmons. Lisa moved from Australia to New York City in 1991 where she began teaching voice as she furthered her education by studying the Voice, Singing and Teaching techniques with 3 excellent teachers. One of whom was Melissa Cross(the Zen of Screaming)and another being Patricia Carey (yes, Mariah’s mother!).
An accomplished song-writer and performer, Lisa has toured Australia and the USA . In addition to performing her own material, she has explored and is familiar with many vocal styles including Jazz, Pop, Folk, Country, Broadway and R & B. She has recorded 3 CD’s and received song-writing awards from popular song contests including Mid Atlantic Song Writing Competition, Billboard Song Contest, Telluride Bluegrass Troubadour Competition, the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival and the Merlefest Song-writing Competition.
Lisa has been teaching singers for 15 years and has taught, and continues to teach, students of all ages, and all levels, from complete beginners to experienced performers, She teaches at her studio in South Austin ( 1.5 miles from Downtown Austin).
